One of the most requested commercial photography services we offer to companies in Perth is head-shots.
Also known as corporate portraits. It’s requested by small businesses’ too and it’s often a tough one to get right because so many things can be working against you.
If you’ve ever tried to have a go yourself and you’ve been disappointed with the results, read on – as we give you a few tips about getting the best out of your next photo session.
Proper preparation prevents poor performance – it’s an old adage but if you think about what you want to achieve and pre-visualize what your images should look like; you’re more likely to get strong and aesthetically pleasing photos. Think about what you’re likely to need on the day. You’re also going to need some ‘Buy-in’ from the people you are taking pictures of. Don’t be tempted to demand people should participate. If you start taking snaps of grumpy and inattentive people, they’re going to translate in the images your taking. You also need to give people plenty of notice before the day. This allows people to get their hair and make-up done if needed and also gives them an opportunity to wear something that looks good on camera. Try and avoid plain white, stripy patterns or overly colourful and flamboyant apparel.
Choose a good location
It might seem obvious but having a suitable location will make a big difference when you’re trying to capture a nice looking corporate photo. Again, avoid using distracting backgrounds. You want your viewers to be looking at the person in the picture and not what’s happening behind them. Also think about the colours and textures of your backgrounds. If you’re shooting pictures outdoors make sure the background is neutral and there are no distracting signs, plants, trees, machinery or anything that looks out of place. Remember there are plenty of great locations here in Perth, just take the time and make sure you choose wisely.
Lighting is everything
George Eastman the founder of the Kodak photographic company was one quoted as saying “Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography”. He was certainly on to something! So take his advice and make sure your location is well lit. If you’re outdoors and using natural light make sure the light is flattering and your subject isn’t squinting in the hot Perth sun. If your shooting indoors then make sure you are in well lit areas or better still, use some flash or fill lighting, this will reduce shadows and make the colours more vibrant.
